What I do

It’s my job to make sure that all of our company’s systems – internet connections, cabling, servers, storage, and more – are up and running and all working together so our employees can work together, too, seamlessly. Sometimes this means troubleshooting and providing support to my team. Other times, it means researching and implementing best practices to make sure we stay ahead of potential issues.

What are the best parts of my job?

Learning, learning, learning! Every day I learn something new. Because the public cloud environment is constantly evolving, I’m always researching and adapting to make sure our systems stay safe. And every issue that comes to me is something I get to find new ways to resolve. I’m always pushing myself to reach new limits and meet new challenges, and that is really fun.

How does my job make an impact?

I help keep our company safe and operating efficiently. Networking is a huge domain, and in this era everything is connected through networks and the internet—so the role I play here is invaluable. Without my work, everything my company does would be riskier.

How to learn more

Look first into networking protocols like TCP/IP/DHCP/UDP/DNS and OSI model. If any of that seems interesting, CBT Nuggets and Rene Molenaar’s videos from NetworkLessons.com are great place to start learning. You can also check out any major cloud provider—they all have their own cybersecurity learning paths.
